Frequently asked questions

Check our FAQ for details on villa

What is Camellia Hills?
Camellia Hills is a five-bedroom boutique tea bungalow on the Dunkeld Estate in Dickoya, in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands. Part of the Teardrop Hotels collection, it sits on the edge of the Castlereagh Valley overlooking the Castlereagh Reservoir, surrounded by working tea estates. Stays are fully all-inclusive and the property is one of the most celebrated hill country retreats in Sri Lanka.
What room types are available?
Camellia Hills has five individually designed bedrooms. The two Lakeview Suites (Osborne and Warleigh) each have king four-poster beds, private sitting areas, and private garden terraces with reservoir views. The Dickoya Suite is the largest room at 52 square metres, with a king bed, bathtub, and a connecting children's room. The Lakeview Bedroom (Norton) has a king four-poster and direct reservoir views. The Camellia Bedroom (Maskeliya) faces the Peak Ridge Forest with twin beds convertible to a king and a private veranda.
Is the stay all-inclusive?
Yes. All stays at Camellia Hills are fully all-inclusive, covering breakfast, lunch, dinner, alcohol, wine, beer, soft drinks, and tea and coffee throughout the day. The kitchen focuses on farm-to-table cuisine using on-site vegetable gardens and produce sourced from nearby towns and markets.
How do I get to Camellia Hills?
The most scenic approach is by train from Kandy to Hatton station, one of the most celebrated rail journeys in Asia, followed by a 30-minute transfer to the bungalow. By road from Colombo the journey takes approximately 4-5 hours via the A1 highway. A seaplane from Colombo with Cinnamon Air lands directly on Castlereagh Reservoir, 20-30 minutes from Colombo by air, making it one of the most dramatic arrival experiences in Sri Lanka.
Is there a swimming pool?
Yes. An infinity pool overlooking Castlereagh Reservoir and the surrounding forest provides the best afternoon hour of any day at Camellia Hills. The water temperature reflects the Hill Country climate at 1,200 metres, so mornings tend to belong to the fireplace and the afternoons to the pool once the sun is full on the valley.
What activities are available from Camellia Hills?
Guided hikes through the surrounding tea estates begin directly from the bungalow. Mountain bikes are available on site. Canoe rides with local fishermen on Castlereagh Reservoir can be arranged. Adam's Peak, Sri Lanka's most sacred mountain and one of the world's great dawn climbs, is 25 kilometres away. White water rafting on the Kelani River at Kitulgala is 40 kilometres away. The property team can also arrange tea factory visits and star-gazing evenings in the estate.
Is Camellia Hills family-friendly?
Yes, with one important note. The Dickoya Suite has a connecting room suitable for children, and the property welcomes families. However, the bungalow's living areas are split-level, which may not be suitable for toddlers or very young children. Families with older children will find the property exceptional, and the Maskeliya twin room can be booked alongside a connecting suite for larger family groups.
