There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a house when it has been built to listen to its surroundings rather than compete with them, and Horizon House has that quiet in abundance. Set on a low bluff above the Indian Ocean just outside Tangalle, in the unhurried village of Unakuruwa, this single-level retreat was designed around the palms and mangrove trees already growing on the plot rather than against them, so the house reads less like an insertion and more like a continuation of the coastline itself. A long infinity pool runs the length of the garden, its far edge dissolving into open sea, while inside, three en-suite bedrooms open onto private courtyards and open-air showers tucked among the trees. Each room has been finished with an easy, unshowy warmth, cotton linens, considered lighting, air conditioning for the warmer nights, and a stillness that makes the ocean feel like the only neighbour that matters.
