No. 77 Leyn Baan GALLE

Starting from $800
8 guests
4 rooms
4 bathrooms

No. 77 Leyn Baan sits inside the walls of UNESCO Galle Fort, on a cobbled street where the neighbouring buildings are other heritage structures, small boutiques, and the slow, companionable energy of one of the oldest living fortified cities in Asia. The villa is a meticulously restored Dutch colonial mansion that has been transformed into something simultaneously respectful of its 440-year history and entirely sure of its own contemporary identity. Dark walls, exposed original stonework, dramatic arched ceilings, a living tree growing through the kitchen and living room, and barrel-vaulted underground corridors that connect sections of the building in a way that makes the floorplan feel like an ongoing discovery. The interiors are the work of someone with a strong point of view and no interest in compromise.

Frequently asked questions

Check our FAQ for details on villa

What is No. 77 Leyn Baan?
No. 77 Leyn Baan is a four-bedroom boutique villa inside the walls of UNESCO Galle Fort, on Leyn Baan Street in the heart of the historic fort. A meticulously restored Dutch colonial mansion, the property combines 440 years of architectural history with dark, dramatic contemporary interiors, a rooftop pool overlooking the Galle Lighthouse and the Indian Ocean, a living tree growing through the kitchen and living room, and barrel-vaulted underground corridors that connect sections of the building. It is managed by One Group of Hotels and accommodates up to 8 guests.
What room types are available?
No. 77 Leyn Baan has four individually designed king ensuite bedrooms. The first has an elegant black and white palette with a private adjoining lounge. The second has a dark green headboard and original red carpet. The third has a steel frame window wall drawing in courtyard light. All four have king beds, air conditioning, ceiling fans, in-room safes, cable television, and ensuite bathrooms with freestanding bathtubs, raw stone walls, timber console vanities, and gold-framed mirrors.
Is there a private pool?
Yes. The rooftop pool is positioned on the upper terrace with the Galle Lighthouse on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. It is one of the most distinctively positioned pools of any property in the Ceylon Haven portfolio, and the view from the water over the Fort rooftops is available nowhere else in Galle.
What is the living tree?
A mature tree grows through the kitchen and living room of No. 77 Leyn Baan, its trunk rising through the floor and its canopy extending above the ceiling. It is the most remarked-upon architectural detail in guest reviews and a feature that cannot be replicated: the restoration was designed around the tree rather than the other way around. The inner courtyard also has a pond with a sculptural centrepiece and three separate garden courtyards provide additional outdoor space within the Fort walls.
What are the underground corridors?
The original Dutch colonial structure includes barrel-vaulted underground corridors that connect different sections of the property beneath the main floor level. The corridors are dramatically atmospheric, with arched stone ceilings and the particular quality of being genuinely old rather than decoratively aged. Guests describe them as one of the property's most memorable features, and they are part of what makes the floorplan feel like an ongoing discovery.
Is there a restaurant on site?
No. 77 Leyn Baan does not have its own restaurant. Instead, the villa team curates bookings at the best restaurants within Galle Fort, many of which are within walking distance of the front door. Galle Fort has one of the most concentrated collections of excellent restaurants of any destination on Sri Lanka's south coast, and the villa's approach of working exclusively with the best local tables produces a dining experience that most in-house restaurants cannot match. The fully equipped kitchen is also available for self-catering.
How far is the beach from No. 77 Leyn Baan?
Unawatuna Beach is 5 kilometres from the villa, approximately 10 minutes by tuk-tuk. Jungle Beach, a quieter and more secluded option, is 7 kilometres away. The Fort's own rocky shoreline is within the walls, but the nearest sandy swimming beach with good conditions is Unawatuna.
