In 1860, a Scottish spice merchant built a hilltop residence above the harbour at Galle. He filled it with art, books and objects gathered from voyages across the Indian Ocean. He married a local seamstress renowned for her beralu lace. The house became a repository of two cultures, two lives and an extraordinary amount of accumulated taste. It is still all of those things.

How many rooms does Sun House Galle have?
Eight - each individually named and designed to capture a chapter in the house's history. The three suites (Gallean, Dumas and Taprobane) are the most spacious, each with a living area and bathtub. The five rooms (Dalloway, Eden, Merchant, Tapestry, Study) are more intimate but no less individual. The Gallean Suite at 60sqm is the largest room in the house, with a super-king bed and private library.
What is The Gallean restaurant?
The Gallean is Sun House's in-house restaurant, set within the original spice stores of the 1860s merchant's house. The menu is Asian fusion built around the spice heritage of the property; fresh market produce, line-caught seafood, Sri Lankan curries and international dishes. Breakfast is included for all guests; lunch and dinner are served daily and open to non-resident diners.
What is Dick's Bar?
Dick's Bar is Sun House's cocktail bar - named for Dick Dumas, the American designer who first transformed the property - and was nominated by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the best new cocktail bars in the world in its opening year. It is known for the Arak sour, the watermelon martini, regular wine tastings and an atmosphere that is considerably more sociable than the rest of the house.
Can Sun House Galle be booked as a private villa?
Yes. The entire property - all eight rooms - can be taken over by a single group, making it one of the most characterful private villa options in Galle. This is particularly popular for family reunions, small destination weddings and group celebrations. Contact Ceylon Haven for details.
How far is Sun House from Galle Fort?
Five minutes on foot. The house sits on Upper Dickson Road on the hill above Galle town; genuinely walkable from the fort, yet high enough and set back enough that it feels completely removed from the fort's daytime activity.
What is the Taprobane Suite?
The newest addition to Sun House, developed in 2023 as a tribute to former owner Geoffrey Dobbs. It stands above the canopy of the property's lower gardens with a bay window overlooking the treetops. Its most distinctive feature is an open-air bathtub on a balcony enclosed entirely by greenery, a detail that has quickly made it the most requested suite in the house.
