Goatfell Kandapola NUWARA ELIYA

Starting from $450
8 guests
4 rooms
4 bathrooms

Goatfell sits at 2,000 metres above sea level on the Concordia Estate in Kandapola, an hour from Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands, and its position is the first thing that needs to be established: this is high enough that the air is noticeably cool, the mornings carry mist off the surrounding ranges, and the panorama of rolling tea hills that fills every view from the property is one of the most sustained pieces of landscape in the country. The bungalow was originally built in the 1940s by the then estate manager, reconstructed using the latest American building technology of the time, and converted to its current form in 2018 by the Teardrop Hotels, who named it after Goatfell, the highest point in Scotland, in acknowledgement of the Scottish planters who first brought tea to Sri Lanka.

What is Goatfell Kandapola?
Goatfell is a four-bedroom fully all-inclusive tea estate bungalow on the Concordia Estate in Kandapola, at 2,000 metres above sea level in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands. Originally a tea estate manager's bungalow rebuilt in the 1940s and converted to its current form in 2018 by Teardrop Hotels, it has four ensuite bedrooms with four-poster beds, a 12-metre infinity pool, a croquet lawn, a firepit, butler service, and 360-degree views of rolling tea hills. Stays are completely all-inclusive including all meals, drinks, and laundry. The bungalow sleeps up to 8 and is available for exclusive use.
What are the four bedrooms?
The three double rooms, Ragala, Kandapola, and Summerhill, each have king-size four-poster beds, a private furnished terrace, and an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub and rain shower. The Kandapola room also has a fireplace and French windows opening directly onto the lawn and the pool. The fourth room, Concordia, has twin canopy beds and connects via an internal door to one of the king rooms, making it a natural family suite. All rooms have polished dark wood floors, hand-sourced antiques, woven local fabrics, and large feature mirrors.
What is included in the price?
Everything except transfers. Three meals daily, afternoon tea between 3.30 and 4.30 PM, soft drinks and a full selection of alcoholic beverages, butler service, and laundry are all included. The kitchen has no set meal times and works around the group. Guided tea estate walks and the logistics for excursions including Horton Plains, the tea factory, and the Hill Country train are arranged by the team. The only additions are personal items and tips.
How cold does it get?
Kandapola sits at 2,000 metres above sea level, which means days are pleasantly warm and evenings drop to temperatures that require a jacket and, after dark, a hot water bottle. The team provides hot water bottles in each room and the lounge has a log fireplace that is lit without prompting most evenings. It is a genuinely different climate from the rest of Sri Lanka and most guests find it a welcome contrast, particularly after time on the coast.
What activities are available?
Marked walking trails run through the Concordia Estate, and a private guide leads tea estate walks daily. The kitchen garden can be visited with the resident gardener. Croquet is set up on the lawn. The team arranges day hikes to Horton Plains National Park, including World's End and Baker's Falls, as well as visits to Finlay's Tea Factory and the scenic rail journey from Nanu Oya to Ella. Birdwatching at this elevation is also notable; the property sits within range of species not commonly found lower down.
How do I get to Goatfell?
By road from Colombo it is approximately four and a half hours. By train from Colombo to Nanu Oya, followed by a 50-minute road transfer, is the scenic alternative and is widely recommended. A seaplane from Colombo to Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya, operated by Cinnamon Air, takes approximately one hour by air followed by a further hour by road. The team organises transfers from all three starting points on request.
