What a villa gives you that a hotel cannot

A house with nobody else in it, a cook who shops that morning, and a pool nobody is sitting beside at seven. Breakfast at the hour you choose rather than the hour it is served. Dinner for two on a night you decide, in a house where the only people are the ones you invited. That is the part couples remember, and no hotel can sell it at any price.

What a resort gives instead is a restaurant open late, a spa downstairs and a front desk at three in the morning. The trade is real and worth knowing before you look at photographs rather than after: in a villa the walk to dinner is usually a drive, there is no spa unless a therapist is booked to the house, and if the generator goes at nine at night it is a phone call rather than a lobby.

On a first trip to Sri Lanka, with no inclination to think about any of it, a good resort is the easier holiday, and we would rather say that now than have you discover it in the first week. If what you are imagining is the place to yourselves, the rest of this page is about where to have it and when.

One coast is calm in any month, which decides when and where

This is the thing the guides leave out, and it is the first question worth settling, because it rules out whole stretches of the island for whole parts of the year.

Two monsoons cross Sri Lanka and they run in opposite directions. The south and west coasts, everything from Wadduwa down through Galle and round to Tangalle, are at their best from roughly December to March: calm water, clear mornings, the sea swimmable most days. From about May to September the south west monsoon turns that same coast rough, and on plenty of days swimming is not sensible however good the house is.

The east reverses it. Arugam Bay is at its calmest and sunniest from roughly May to September, which is exactly when the south is not. So there is no bad month to marry in. There is only a wrong coast for the month you have chosen, and the two are easy to confuse when every photograph on the internet was taken in February.

The hill country keeps its own weather and is cool year round, which is why a tea estate works as the second half of a trip whichever months you are travelling in. Mornings there are genuinely cold by Sri Lankan standards. Bring something warm, which nobody tells you.

Privacy in a house that comes with staff

Almost every villa here is staffed, and it is the part couples ask about most carefully and the part written about least honestly. The worry is reasonable: a honeymoon in a house where somebody else is always present is not a honeymoon.

In practice the arrangement is quieter than it sounds. Staff arrive in the morning, cook, clean, and leave the house to you between meals and after dinner. At the larger properties they live in a separate annexe with its own entrance and you will not see them unless you ask for something. The pool, the garden and the sitting rooms are yours at every hour, which is the difference from a hotel rather than a lesser version of one.

Two things are worth asking before you book, and they differ house to house: whether the staff sleep on site or go home at night, and whether dinner can be left prepared so that an evening is entirely your own. Both are usually yes. Neither is universally yes, and the individual villa page is the place to check it or to ask us.

What a week actually looks like

Most couples split the trip, and the split that works is coast and hills rather than three coasts in seven nights. The drives here are slower than the map suggests.

From Bandaranaike International the Kalutara stretch is the shortest run and makes a sensible first or last night. Galle and the beaches either side of it are roughly two and a half to three hours on the expressway. Tangalle and the far south are longer again, and Arugam Bay on the east coast is a full day, which is why it belongs in a longer trip or a trip built around it.

The train from Kandy up through the tea country is the one piece of standard advice worth keeping. It is slow, it is not luxurious, and the stretch between Hatton and Ella is the best few hours of most people's trip. Book the seats ahead. For the coast, whale watching leaves Mirissa in the early morning between roughly November and April, and Galle Fort is the one place on the south coast where dinner is a walk rather than a drive.

Frequently asked questions

What couples ask before booking a house for two.

Is a private villa better than a hotel for a honeymoon?

It depends on what you want to be true at seven in the morning. A villa gives you the pool, the garden and the house with nobody else in them, and a cook who works to your timing rather than a service window. A resort gives you a restaurant open late, a spa downstairs and somebody at a desk all night. If this is a first trip to Sri Lanka and you would rather not think about logistics, a good resort is the easier holiday. If the appeal is having the place to yourselves, take the villa.

When is the best time for a honeymoon in Sri Lanka?

There is no bad month, only a wrong coast for the month. The south and west coasts are at their best from roughly December to March. The east, which means Arugam Bay, is at its best from roughly May to September, when the south is rough. The hill country is cool and workable all year. Tell us your dates and we will tell you which coast they point at.

Will we actually have privacy if the villa is staffed?

Yes, and it is the question worth asking in detail rather than taking on trust. Staff generally cook, clean and then leave you the house between meals and after dinner, and at the larger properties they live in a separate annexe. The pool and the garden are yours at every hour. What varies house to house is whether anyone sleeps on site and whether dinner can be left prepared so an evening is entirely your own. Ask us about a specific house and we will confirm it.

Do we need a big villa if it is only the two of us?

No, and the smaller houses are worth asking for by name because they are the ones that go first. Plenty of couples do take a larger house for the garden, the pool and the privacy of the grounds rather than the bedrooms, and the rate for exclusive use can make that reasonable outside the peak weeks. Both are normal here. Tell us which way you lean and we will shortlist accordingly.

Can you arrange a proposal, a vow renewal or a dinner for an anniversary?

Yes. A dinner laid in the garden or on the sand, a cake, flowers from the morning market, a photographer, a celebrant for a vow renewal on the beach. These are arranged with the villa team rather than bought as a package, so tell us what you have in mind and how private you want it, and we will come back with what the house can do and what it costs.

How far is the south coast from the airport?

The Kalutara stretch just south of Colombo is the shortest run and suits a first or last night. Galle and the beaches either side are roughly two and a half to three hours on the expressway. Tangalle and the far south are longer. Arugam Bay on the east coast is effectively a full day, so it belongs in a longer trip rather than a week.
