Island Villa Ahangama AHANGAMA

Starting from $800

Island Villa Ahangama sits in a quiet residential lane in Ahangama, a few minutes from the Galle-Matara coastal road, within a tropical garden of coconut trees, deep purple orchids, and giant ferns that was planted with the kind of care that takes decades to achieve and a few minutes to appreciate. The property comprises two houses and a 13-metre pool on a shared garden terrace between them, and the combination of the two buildings, the garden, and the staff who look after both produces something that feels considerably less like a hotel and considerably more like staying at the home of a Sri Lankan family with very good taste and an excellent cook.

What is Island Villa Ahangama?
Island Villa Ahangama, known locally as Kiri Palu, is a boutique villa property in the quiet village of Ahangama on Sri Lanka's southern coast. It comprises two individually designed houses within a shared elegantly landscaped tropical garden, centred on a 13-metre pool. The Main House is a beautifully restored Sinhalese ancestral walauwa with ornate carved fretwork and colonial-era interiors. The Garden House sits at the top of the garden overlooking the pool with its own independent living spaces. Together the two houses offer six ensuite bedrooms accommodating up to twelve guests.
What room types are available?
Island Villa Ahangama has six ensuite bedrooms across two houses. In the Main House: a ground-floor Suite, a Deluxe King Room, a Suite with Balcony, and an upstairs master Suite with Balcony. In the Garden House: a Superior King Room and a Suite with Balcony. All rooms have high ceilings, air conditioning, ceiling fans, abundant storage, writing desks, and ensuite bathrooms with rain showers.
Can we book just one house?
Yes. Both houses can be booked individually or together for exclusive use of the full property. The Garden House has its own kitchen, dining area, and living room, making it a self-contained option for smaller groups. The two-house layout also suits larger parties or multi-family groups who want proximity without sharing all living spaces.
Is there a private chef?
Yes. A private chef is available throughout the stay and cooks to order from a priced menu covering Sri Lankan and international cuisine. The Sri Lankan rice and curry is particularly recommended. Breakfast is available daily and all other meals can be arranged on request. Guests in the Garden House can also use the independent kitchen for self-catering.
How far is Island Villa Ahangama from the beach?
Ahangama Beach is approximately 1.4 kilometres from the villa, around 5 minutes by tuk-tuk. The surf breaks of Ahangama and the broader beach scene of Weligama Bay are both within 15 minutes. The property is set slightly inland in a quiet residential area, which accounts for the exceptional garden and the absence of road noise.
How far is Island Villa Ahangama from Galle Fort?
Galle Fort is 18 kilometres from Island Villa Ahangama, approximately 25 minutes by road. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 17th-century Dutch ramparts, boutique hotels, galleries, restaurants, and one of the most civilised sunset walks in the Indian Ocean region.
What makes the Main House architecturally distinctive?
The Main House is a restored Sinhalese ancestral walauwa, a form of aristocratic manor house that predates colonial architecture on the island. Its defining features are the intricate floral fretwork carved along the eaves and window frames, the ornate double entrance doors, the colonnaded entrance hall with polished stone floors, and the high-ceilinged rooms furnished with antiques and original artwork. The property was meticulously restored by its Sri Lankan owners to honour the original design while incorporating contemporary comforts.
