What is Kirana Villa Bentota?
Kirana Villa Bentota is a four-bedroom beachfront villa on a secluded stretch of Bentota's southern beach on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast. Designed by celebrated architect Channa Daswatte, the villa is built around a 20-metre infinity pool and an open-sided living pavilion facing the Indian Ocean. The name Kirana means ray of light, and the villa's west-facing position delivers daily sunsets that justify the name entirely.
What room types are available?
Kirana Villa has four ensuite bedrooms. The Master Suite and Garden Suite each have king-sized beds with garden views. The Family Suite comprises two connecting rooms: one with a king bed and one with twin beds, making it ideal for families or groups needing flexible sleeping arrangements. All rooms share the same palette of white, warm timber, and teal and aqua accents, with garden-facing window walls, air conditioning, ceiling fans, rain showers, and in-room safes.
Is the villa alcohol-free?
Yes. Kirana Villa does not serve alcohol on the property. Guests are welcome to bring their own. The kitchen produces a strong selection of fresh juices, herbal teas, and Ayurvedic-inspired drinks that most guests find more than compensate.
What is the approach to dining at Kirana Villa?
The kitchen at Kirana is inspired by Ayurvedic principles, building menus around six complementary tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Menus are composed from fresh local produce and adapt to the preferences of each guest. Sri Lankan and international dishes are both on offer, and the resident chef's seafood dinners and traditional Sri Lankan breakfasts are consistently among the most praised aspects of the stay in guest reviews.
How far is the beach?
The beach is directly accessible from the villa garden. A sweep of tropical lawn and a row of coconut palms separate the pool from the sand. The stretch of Bentota beach in front of the villa is quiet, secluded, and rarely crowded. Swimming is best from November through April when the Indian Ocean is calm on the southwestern coast.
How far is Kirana Villa from Lunuganga?
Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's private estate and garden, cultivated over four decades and now open to visitors, is approximately 12 kilometres from Kirana Villa, around 15 minutes by road. Given that the villa was designed by Channa Daswatte, a close friend and collaborator of Bawa, a visit to Lunuganga during a stay at Kirana is one of the more coherent ways to experience the Sri Lankan design legacy that both men shaped.
Is Kirana Villa family-friendly?
Yes. The Family Suite with its king and twin connecting rooms is specifically designed for families. The garden and lawn are generous. The beach is accessed directly through the garden without crossing a road. The chef adapts menus for children on request. The villa sleeps up to 12 guests across four bedrooms, and the exclusive-use arrangement means the pool and all outdoor spaces belong entirely to the party in residence.
