Magalla Casa is a 150-year-old Dutch colonial villa on Bandaranayake Place in Magalla, a quiet residential pocket of Galle 1.5 kilometres from Galle Fort. The building is the kind of structure that announces itself the moment you step through the white entrance gate: original limestone walls, ceilings that rise four metres above the tiled floors, arched internal doorways, an ornate painted ceiling in the main living room, and a natural cooling system built into the structure by its Dutch architects that keeps the interior several degrees cooler than the street outside, without any mechanical assistance. The renovation has preserved all of this while adding air conditioning, modern bathrooms, and a kitchen that functions as a proper working space rather than an afterthought.

Frequently asked questions

Check our FAQ for details on villa

What is Magalla Casa?
Magalla Casa is a three-bedroom Dutch colonial villa in Magalla, Galle, built approximately 150 years ago and carefully restored to preserve its original limestone walls, ornate painted ceilings, arched doorways, and natural passive cooling system. The villa has a private pool, a tropical garden, a barbecue area, an in-house cook, and a dedicated caretaker. It sleeps up to seven guests across three ensuite ground-floor bedrooms and is bookable as exclusive use or room by room. Galle Fort is 1.5 kilometres away, approximately ten minutes by tuk-tuk.
What are the three bedrooms?
Two Deluxe Rooms each sleep up to two guests with king-size beds, air conditioning, flat-screen TV, and courtyard views. The Cinnamon Room sleeps up to three guests and adds a bathtub to the ensuite, along with a slightly larger footprint. All three rooms are on the ground floor with direct garden access and the same high-ceilinged, antique-furnished character as the rest of the house. Mosquito nets are provided on all beds.
Is there a cook?
Yes. An in-house cook is available throughout the stay and operates on a grocery concept: guests source or pre-order the ingredients they want, and the cook prepares and serves the meal at a fixed preparation charge. For guests who want a more structured arrangement, traditional Sri Lankan feasts and international menus can be pre-arranged directly. Breakfast is included daily and rotates between Sri Lankan and continental options, including the coconut roti that appears most frequently in guest reviews.
How far is Galle Fort from the villa?
Galle Fort is 1.5 kilometres from the villa, approximately ten minutes by tuk-tuk from the gate. The Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Dutch colonial ramparts, a working lighthouse, independent boutiques, galleries, and some of the best restaurants on Sri Lanka's south coast. It is close enough for a morning visit and an evening dinner without the stay feeling organised around transport logistics.
Can the villa be booked for exclusive use?
Yes. Magalla Casa is available for exclusive use for groups of up to seven guests across all three rooms. Exclusive use gives the group full access to all villa facilities including the pool, garden, barbecue, and common areas, along with personalised service from the cook and caretaker throughout the stay. It can also be booked room by room for individual travellers, couples, or smaller groups who are happy to share the common spaces with other guests.
What is the Dutch colonial architecture like inside?
The interior is the defining feature of the house and the thing most guests mention first. The ceilings rise four metres above original tiled floors, the main living room has an ornate painted ceiling with a chandelier, arched internal doorways connect the rooms, and the limestone walls that have stood for 150 years keep the interior naturally cool without mechanical assistance. The restoration has added modern amenities without compromising any of the original fabric, and the result is a house that feels genuinely historic rather than heritage-themed.
